As humans, we tend to forget that what we perceive is not always accurate. We believe that feelings and emotions can only be exhibited through our actions. A smile, perhaps, signifies happiness and joy. A frown, on the other hand, demonstrates sadness. Although these hold true in most cases, there are many times in which we cover our true emotions with something other than what we feel. For through two lenses, I decided to showcase this idea by demonstrating reality vs. what is perceived

The image on the left demonstrates what is typically observed from the character's behavior. When she's around her friends, she is content, laughing, and having a good time. The happiness that she experiences, however, is in the moment rather than true, and long lasting. The white background helps emphasize her idea of joy by accentuating her facial expressions. It is also able to bring forth light, and vibrance to the image.

On the other hand, the image on the right demonstrates the character's true emotions. By her body language, she is quickly viewed as frustrated, and alone. This is who she truly believes herself to be. The dark background is able to create negative space, and allow for the image to appear solemn.

As a whole, the image explicitly demonstrates the differences between reality and what is perceived. The distance between the characters in the images demonstrates how opposite both of these views can be. The black and white, meeting in the center of the image, allows for there to be a visual contrast on the perceptions of these two “lenses”.
