Chronophobia is the irrational fear of time. Since time is more of an abstract idea, those who fear it simply fear that time is moving too fast, running out, or the individual does not understand the concept. Symptoms associated with chronophobia include extreme anxiety, inability to comprehend time (speeds up or slows down too fast), and circular thought. In extreme cases, someone who suffers chronophobia experiences panic attacks that include bodily convulsions, shortness of breath, and excessive sweating.
Chronophobia is most likely found in elders or prisoners. Older people fear time because they feel that it is passing by too fast. This produces a fear within them because it makes them believe that their time on this planet is limited. Their fear of death then causes them to believe that time is, somehow, speeding up. On the other hand, prisoners fear time because they are unable to keep track of it. Within their dismal cells or bleak, they feel as they have no control of their time. This creates their irrational fear of time moving too slow, or too fast.
Although I could not portray any of the two scenarios listed above in my image, I was able to demonstrate how someone could be suffocated by time. In general, someone experiencing chronophobia is anxious and uneasy. This is portrayed by the facial expression and body language of the girl in the image. As for the fear of time, I put a clock in the girl’s mouth to show how she is being physically suffocated by it. This could be because it is moving too fast, too slow, or because it is limited.
