Anankastic Personality Disorder, also referred to as Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), is a mental disorder which effects the behavior of those who suffer from it. People who suffer from OCPD experience rigid adherence to rules and regulations, an overwhelming need for order, and unwillingness to yield or give any responsibilities to others. OCPD patients tend to have a harder time finishing tasks, because their desire for perfection interferes with the accomplishment of any chores that they must do. They also suffer from lack of generosity, and hoarding behaviors.
Although the characteristics of this disease are closely related to those of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, people who suffer OCD are aware that their actions are unreasonable. On the other hand, people who suffer from OCPD believe that their actions are just, and that their way is “the best way”. Also, OCPD patients experience problems with their interpersonal relationships, whereas OCD effects majority of a person’s life including work, and social/family life.
My picture depicts Anankastic Personality Disorder because it demonstrates the obsessions that this person holds with lists and orders. In the background of the picture, the viewer can see a “to do list.” Each sticky note is placed right below the previous one, allowing there to be a factor of perfectionism within the image. Also, the amount of sticky notes present is able to exaggerate the worst that could happen for someone who suffers OCPD. I chose to double expose the girl in the image to show frustration, yet her desire to achieve perfection. Also, the fact that the viewer is unable to truly identify her face brings forth the idea that something is “off” with this person. In my opinion, this emphasizes the problems aroused with interpersonal relationships because from the outside, friends and family are unable to identify how to help their loved one.
